After the first performance of the opera on 6 March 1853 at the Le Fenice opera house in Venice, its composer Verdi in his letter to his friend Muzio wrote: “La Traviata last night was a failure. Was the fault mine or the singers’? Time will tell.” It is said that the audience found the 38 years old soprano Fanny Salvini-Donatelli in her role of Violetta both too old and too overweight.☺
In your initial contacts while seeking an acquirer for your business, there may be some who do not like your product, e.g. your company. Maybe your presentation was not up to the point or your explanations were not clearly understood by the other party. Since seeking an acquirer is not something you do every day, you might be doing some things for the first time in your life. When you do something for the first time it is quite normal to have a degree of error.
If the first method to decrease the amount of error is to have someone with you who is experienced in this issue, the second oneis to be able to look at your company from outside and learn to act according to what you see. Even if you made a mistake once, it is possible to correct it most of the time.
Verdi corrected his mistake, too. After some revisions, mostly affecting acts 2 and 3, the opera was performed again in Venice in 1854, this time at the Teatro San Benedetto. This performance was a big success, also due to Maria Spezia-Aldigheri’s portrayal of Violetta.
